Know Lumbini

As the historical birthplace of Gautama Siddhartha Buddha, Lumbini is the most important religious sites in the world. Buddha, who inspired a global philosophy of peace and reflection, was born under Bodhi tree in Lumbini, in year 563 BC.

Despite a major pilgrimage destination, Lumbini is nothing like other other destinations around the world. Pilgrims come here on a slow relaxed manner and many stay respectful to meditate in monasteries around the holy place. That being said, Lumbini experienced a great revival in recent years, and new monasteries appear here before you can say "Namo Buddhaye".

In the middle of Lumbini is the Maya Devi Temple, which marks the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautam, prince of Kapilavastu. Around the temple is sacred garden containing Ashoka pillar and foundation ruins of dozens of ancient stupas and monasteries. Extending for miles around the Holy Garden is a huge park known as the Lumbini Development Zone, designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in 1978. It is a work in progress, but the gardens and lakes are full of gardens and Buddhist monasteries built by Buddhist communities throughout the world.

You can spend a day or two to explore the place, so it's worth spending the night. Hotel Ananda near the entrance of Lumbini is the perfect place to make your visit a memorable Lumbini.
